A Brief History Of Aikido
|
Traditional
Aikido
Aikido was established by Professor
Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969).
He studied older styles of
Jujutsu and other martial arts, especially Daito-ryu Aiki Jutsu,
which specializes in the application of joint techniques.
He developed a new philosophy and the techniques that later
comprised Aikido.
In 1931, the Kobukan school was
founded. A new Aikikai (Aiki Association) was established
in 1948. Since then, Aikido has spread throughout the
world.1

Tomiki
Aikido
Professor Kenji Tomiki was born is Akita
prefecture in 1900. He began to learn Judo at the age of
10, and continued to practice the art for the rest of his
life.
Upon completing his elementary and secondary school
studies, he received the two highest awards for both academic
excellence and achievement in physical education. In 1923,
Tomiki matriculated in the Economic Department of the Waseda
University from which he graduated in 1927.
During his
college years, the young Kenji Tomiki met Dr. Jogoro Kano (the
founder of Judo) and received personal instruction from
him. Professor Tomiki's form of Aikido was thus influenced
by Dr. Kano's philosophy and education - as well as master
Ueshiba's mastery and knowledge of Aikido.1
